One unique item that we like to make here at Unique Craft Works is a wooden plate. Why? Because they look amazing! Also they make a great statement and alternative within the charcuterie board arena. Why keep everything on a single large platter when one can spread it around on several plates. And we can be honest here a plate holds the meat, fruits, and nuts better than a flat block of wood.
What is the Best Size?
We have been experimenting with various sizes of wooden plates and we have some conclusions.
The best size for personal use is a 9 Inch diameter plate. When starting with a .75 inch thick board of lumber this size to thickness ratio has the perfect feel and balance.
If you want to go with a larger wooden plate at 12 inch diameter it has a lighter feel for the size when using a .75 inch thick board. This size is great for serving or using as a charger to a normal plate.
Drawbacks to Wooden Plates
This author loves the wooden plates and uses them daily. There are some limitations and things to be aware of if looking to get away from plastic, paper, or other traditional plate materials.
Warping is Possible
First unlike a large thick cutting board a wooden plate will warp if washed heavily in water frequently. One must keep the plate flat at rest when it dries to maintain the shape.
Not for Cutting
They are not ideal for cutting steaks as you eat them because the material is thinner than a normal cutting board so it can show wear on an eating surface that one would not have a problem with on a cutting board.
Get the Right Wood
All of the rules for the type of wood you want from a cutting board still apply. Click here for an overview of the types of wood that are best for a cutting board. The short answer here is that we at Unique Craft Works use Maple, Walnut, and Cherry for wooden plates and for anything food related.
Conclusion
Wooden plates are fun, beautiful, and are a great addition to any social gathering. We at Unique Craft Works encourage everyone to give them a spin and see how they work for you.
